In the last chunk of Glassners novel Culture of Fear, he addresses the fear of metaphoric illnesses and the fear of plane crashes. It was said that some illnesses were created in the media to criticize the government. When illnesses were greatly publicized people became more scared purchasing more medicines and and making some medicines and operations a greater demand. This caused people opportunity to receive more money from the government and corporations. Glassner believes that metaphoric illnesses will either always be around or that more will be created. Glassner also tells of the fear of plane crashes. He tells of how the media and people pay little attention to research and statistics. In reality there are more car crashes than there are plane crashes. Plane crashes are 1 in 4 million so the fear of flying is produced by the media. It seems throughout this book that the media is the root of our fears and stereotypes of the world.

Yes, I think that the fear of flying for some people is the fault of the media because like if you hear about planes in the media it’s always something like a crash or when it gets hijacked. I know I am afraid of flying and it mostly because I think that the plane is going to crash.
ReplyDeleteI think so because with the emphasis put on terrorist attacks among other things, people tend to avoid doing things or going places that require a plane to do so. I myself was afraid of flying and it was fueled by the media.
ReplyDeleteI don't really think its the media. I thinks its the chance of it happening that scares people. They know it is possible for a plane to crash and it has happened before. If anything, the media tries to relieve the fear so more people can fly. Plane crashes are rare. People just know that they are possible and get scared.
ReplyDeleteYeah i think that if plane chrashes didnt get that much media attention then people wouldnt even know they happened and therefore they wouldnt fear it. A lot of this fear also has to do with the fact that there are a bunch of movies made about plane crashes and planes being hijacked.
